Being very large in area (approximately 2500 square kilometres), the Yarra Valley has a broad diversity in altitude 50-400 metres (164-1312 feet), soil and climatic influence and can be broken down into a number of
sub-regions that include Dixons Creek, Yarra Glen, Coldstream, Gruyere, Woori Yallock, Hoddles Creek and Wesbern.
Coombe Farm is located entirely in the Coldstream sub-region of the Yarra Valley. The Coombe Farm vineyards are north facing, are located at 40-90 metres of altitude and on soils that vary from clay river loam on the lower sites to well-drained granitic soils on the slopes.
Coldstream experiences fairly typical Yarra Valley climatic conditions. It is cooler than most other Australian regions and also Bordeaux, but warmer than Burgundy and Champagne. Rainfall is winter/spring dominant, with summer relatively cool and dry. The region does experience some maritime influence that limits the diurnal temperature fluctuation (day-night), but the Mean January Temperature (MJT) is less than 20C.
Many of Coombe Farm’s vineyards are north facing and the warmest sites in the region, allowing optimal ripening and reducing disease pressure in wet years.
